Airplay mirroring not working

When I turn airplay on I get a black screen on my TV it has audio. For some reason mirroring will not turn on. Airplay drop menu shows Apple TV. Airplay and Apple Tv are both on the correct network. When I use safari I can play YouTube videos. I am using OS X El Capitan. All Systems are up to date . I also ran disk utility its says everything is fine. Is there something else I should be doing.

Just guessing here... Maybe the display settings for Airplay result in a video resolution or refresh rate that are not supported by your tv set.

I don't have an Apple TV, but I do use Airplay from my rMBP to my iMac using the AirServer application.

System Preferences->Displays shows me two windows, one for each display. Don't you see a second window for the Airplay device?

Try seeing the options there, and maybe change the resolution to something your tv can support.

Same here. The other devices mirror ok to ATV4 (iPad3, Ipad2, Iphone6, Iphone4). I updated all software, restarted the individual devices (iMac and ATV4 and the router). The Apple TV shows a black screen. Interesting enough if I play a film from my iMac using iTunes it works just fine. I don' t get it. Firewall is set to off.

Can anybody help?

Many thanks

Paolo
